DETROIT (AP) _ Brandon Convery scored two goals Friday night to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-4 exhibition victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

Sergei Berezin, Mike Johnson and Kevyn Adams also scored for the Maple Leafs (1-2-1), who took control with four goals in a 6:03 span of the first period. Fredrik Modin and Jason Podollan each had two assists for Toronto.

Darren McCarty, Doug Brown, Brent Gilchrist and Steve Yzerman scored for Detroit as the defending Stanley Cup champions fell to 1-2 in the preseason.

Marcel Cousineau played the entire game in goal for the Maple Leafs and stopped 20 shots.


Devils 0, Flyers 0, OT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Philadelphia and New Jersey played a scoreless exhibition tie in a game dominated by excellent goaltending.

The Flyers outshot the Devils 31-23 but failed to convert seven power plays.

New Jersey had a chance to win it in overtime on its third power play of the game, but managed only one weak shot out of a scramble in front of the net and that was smothered by goalie Garth Snow.

New Jersey goalie Mike Dunham, who stopped 19 shots, made his best saves during three power plays in the second period. Richard Shulmistra replaced Dunham with 16:50 left in the third period.

Philadelphia’s Ron Hextall stopped 13 shots, all in the first period, before Snow replaced him with 8:57 left in the second period.


Canadiens 3, Bruins 3, OT

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Benoit Brunet scored two goals and Montreal Canadiens rallied from a three-goal deficit for the tie.

Boston’s first two goals came when Dimitri Khristich lifted a backhand over Jose Theodore with three seconds remaining on a power play. Jason Allison made it 2-0 by converting a penalty shot with just over a minute remaining in the period.

Sebastien Bordeleau scored early in the third period to make it 3-1. Brunet’s first goal of the night made it 3-2 with a little less than 17 minutes remaining.

Three minutes later Brunet tied it for the Canadiens (3-0-2), scoring on a rebound of a shot by Craig Rivet.


Blackhawks 3, Coyotes 2

CHICAGO (AP) _ Alexei Zhamnov scored a goal and set up another to lead Chicago.

Zhamnov’s power-play goal from the right slot 16:29 into the first period gave the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead. Zhamnov, who led the Chicago in assists last season, helped set up rookie Dan Cleary’s power-play score 2:18 later.

Sergei Krivokrasov also scored for the Blackhawks.

Phoenix got goals from Dallas Drake and Mike Pomichter.


Capitals 3, Panthers 1

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) _ Todd Kryger scored two goals to lead Washington, which played without star right wing Peter Bondra who was suspended by the team for refusing to play because he wants his contract negotiated.

Kryger scored twice on power plays to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead.

Rob Niedermayer brought Florida within a goal, but Kelly Miller scored on a two-man advantage for the final goal.


Blues 4, Stars 3

DALLAS (AP) _ Terry Yake scored St. Louis’ first goal and assisted on its second.

Jim Campbell, Brett Hull and Jamal Mayers scored in the middle period as the Blues went on to their its first preseason victory in four games.

Jere Lehtinen scored Dallas’ first goal and later redirected a shot that went off the crossbar for another. Dan Keczmer closed Dallas’ scoring with a goal with nine seconds left to play.


Penguins 2, Sabres 1

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) _ Tom Barrasso, making his first start in goal since last November, stopped 24 shots to lead Pittsburgh.

Barrasso, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury, played two periods and stopped all but one of 25 shots.

Roman Oksiuta scored the game-winning goal 7:00 into the third period.

Bryan Holzinger scored a power-play goal 8:38 into the first period to give the Sabres a 1-0 lead.

Rob Brown tied the game 5:05 into the second period when he scored on a wrist shot from the far circle.
