New Wetmore deli open, features house-cured meats, beef jerky

August 24, 2018

There may not be a better name for a sandwich shop owner. After more than 11 years of working as a bartender at the Schooners Sports Bar on the Northeast Side, Jerry DelliGatti has bought the Wetmore Deli.

DelliGatti’s Sandwich Shop, the new name, made its debut Wednesday at 13465 Wetmore Road, tucked inside a shopping center just north of the intersection of Thousand Oaks. Former Wetmore owners Kristy Harrison and William VanFossan continue to help out in the restaurant as part of the transition process.

DelliGatti, who has been cooking since he was 13 years old, was known for cooking lavish food spreads that featured meatloaf, sausage and pasta dishes for Schooners patrons on NFL Sundays and for other special events.

Being in charge of his own place is a different game. “It’s a lot of pressure and there are some nerves involved, but it’s time,” DelliGatti said.

Some of the highlights of DelliGatti’s menu are the house-made roast beef and a pastrami cured for five days that’s used in the Reuben sandwich. There are seven cold sandwiches, deli staples from tuna salad to clubs, priced from $6.50 to $8.99 with one side.

The hot sandwich menu features two Philly cheesesteaks, stuffed grilled cheeses, open-faced roast beef and the house-roasted turkey Big Will sandwich that is a carryover from the Wetmore Deli menu.

Daily specials, priced at $9.99 with a roll and drink, range from Monday’s meatloaf to Wednesday’s stuffed shells with meatballs and Thursday’s pot roast.

And here’s something you don’t see everyday: DelliGatti sells homemade beef jerky ($8) to go, vacuum-sealed in 3-ounce packages that contain their own toothpick to clean the beef from your teeth when the snacking is done. The five flavors include beef fajita, lemon pepper, hot and spicy, black pepper and garlic teriyaki. (He was sold out on Friday, but promises more will be in stock Monday).
