Stephenson Signs Deal With Cards
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Right-hander Garret Stephenson and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract, avoiding salary arbitration.
Stephenson, who had a $550,000 base salary last season, could make more than $1 million next year, depending on how many games he pitches.
Stephenson was the Cardinals’ No. 2 starter in 2000 and went 16-9 record with a 4.49 ERA, 123 strikeouts and 63 walks.
He stained his elbow in the first-round sweep of Atlanta and missed the NL championship series. He pitched 3 2-3 innings in Game 3 against Atlanta, allowing one run and three hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Stephenson has a career record of 30-21 with a 4.44 ERA in five seasons with Baltimore, Philadelphia and St. Louis.
St. Louis acquired Stephenson from Philadelphia in a 1998.
