STORAGE UNIT-DEAD BOY

DENVER _ The mother of a 7-year-old found dead inside a storage unit just before Christmas was charged Monday in the boy’s death. Elisha Pankey was formally charged with child abuse resulting in the death of Caden McWilliams and abuse of a corpse. Online court records do not list an attorney for Pankey who could comment on the charges. Pankey, 43, turned herself in to Denver police on Wednesday and remains jailed on $250,000 bond. A judge has sealed all records in the case, including a document laying out the reasons for Pankey’s arrest. By Kathleen Foody. SENT: 380 words, photo.

_ WEDDING CAKE CASE-COLORADO _ A judge says the latest legal challenge by a Colorado baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple can continue.

_ ROAD RAGE SHOOTING-COLORADO _ A judge has entered a not guilty plea on behalf of a man accused of killing a 13-year-old and wounding three other people in a shooting prosecutors say was motivated by road rage.

_ AVALANCHE DEATH _ Officials say a man killed in an avalanche in southwestern Colorado was participating in an advanced avalanche safety class at the time.

_ AVALANCHE DANGER _ The avalanche danger is elevated in western Colorado because of fresh, heavy snow and strong winds.

_ FINANCIAL MARKETS-BOARD OF TRADE _ Wheat for Mar. was off .25 cent at 5.1675 a bushel; Mar. corn fell .75 cent at 3.8225 a bushel; Mar. oats was lost .50 cent at $2.7950 a bushel; while Jan. soybeans rose 2.25 cents at $9.1225 a bushel.

BRONCOS COACHING SEARCH

ENGLEWOOD — John Elway met with Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio about the Denver Broncos’ head coaching vacancy Monday, a day after Chicago’s 16-15 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC wild-card playoffs. At 60, Fangio is the oldest of the five candidates on Elway’s short list as he searches for his fourth head coach in six years. Fangio was also expected to interview for Miami’s head coaching vacancy, but the Dolphins didn’t schedule an interview with him. By Arnie Stapleton. SENT: 710 words, photo.

Lindsey Vonn is planning to return from injury this weekend for speed races in Austria as she resumes her quest for the all-time record for World Cup wins. It will be her first races of the season after hurting her knee and sitting out six events. Vonn needs five more victories to break the overall record of 86 World Cup wins.
