MARION, S.C. – Hundreds of people gathered in downtown Marion Saturday for a full day of activities at the 27th annual Marion Foxtrot Festival.

The festival opened Friday night with a children’s show from Porkchop Productions of Aiken at the Marion Opera House, where kids were treated to hot dogs and drinks after the show. Porkchop Productions will return to Marion on July 12 as part of the Marion County Library summer reading program.

A fireworks display at Withlacoochee Park closed out the night.

Saturday’s activities began with more than 300 participants in the annual parade along with dozens of vendors with arts and crafts, toys, clothing items and carnival rides. Plenty of food was available at the international food pavilion while performers hit the Main Street stage with the Pizazz Band as the headliners.

Marion Mayor Ashley Brady called the event fantastic.

“We’re excited about it,” he said. “We had a good little crowd at the performance at the Opera House and Saturday is a big day.”

A few vendors came to the festival for the first time.

Brittons Neck native and vice president of the Marion County NAACP LaChristy Moore of Moore’s Chic and Fashion featured several items including toys, pocketbooks, clothes and sports team license plates.

“I’m just helping out and showing my face,” Moore said. “We’re just doing it for the festival.”

Brandon and Jasmine Morrison of BJ’s Krusty Krabs of Latta were in attendance selling Lowcountry seafood broil, crab legs and shrimp.

“We’re open Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Latta,” Jasmine Morrison said. “It’s our first time at the festival and wanted people to check us out.”

Brady said he was looking forward to the crowd on Main Street Marion.

“The Foxtrot Committee, which is a group of volunteers, are the main catalyst behind the festival,” Brady said. “They work hard and the city on our part helps hand in hand. We make sure the streets are clean and helping out with setting up the fire and police protection. The committee does the grunt of the work and we support them anyway we can.”
