MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The office of mayor in Vermont's capital city has its first contender after Mayor John Hollar announced he will not seek re-election.

City Councilor Anne Watson announced Monday that she plans to run for mayor during a press conference at City Hall. The Times Argus reports she received an endorsement from Democratic state Rep. Mary Hooper — who represents Montpelier in the Legislature.

Watson says financial and environmental sustainability, alongside housing, will be a high priority for her candidacy.

The announcement comes more than two months before the deadline for filing nomination petitions.
