Closings planned for Bush repose and funeral

December 4, 2018

Funeral services for President George H.W. Bush will complicate travel in Houston starting Wednesday morning, as a wide security perimeter will require numerous street closings.

Houston police, under guidance from the Secret Service, will close the following streets from 11 a.m. Wednesday to 1 p.m. Thursday:

Riverway between Sage and South Post Oak

Sage between Tangle and Woodway

Woodway between Chimney Rock and North Post Oak

Traffic on Woodway between Chimney Rock and Loop 610 also will be severely limited, officials said.

Traffic and transit in the area will be affected, officials said. Drivers and riders should plan for extra travel time.

Bush will lie in repose at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. Anyone is welcome.

Mourners, however, have a host of restrictions. No photography, large bags or weapons will be allowed. Everyone must be bused to the church and may not drive or walk to St. Martins.

“You have to go to Second Baptist,” stressed Houston Assistant Police Chief Matt Slinkard.

People must check in at Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway, where they will be screened and then can board a Metropolitan Transit Authority bus for St. Martins. Buses will beigng loading at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday and leave Second Baptist starting at 5:15 p.m. The last bus will depart 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

The funeral on Thursday is invitation only.
