Quakes Recorded at Japan Volcano
TOKYO (AP) _ Japan’s Meteorological Agency urged caution Sunday after hundreds of earthquakes were recorded near an active volcano in the southern part of the nation.
The agency said about 450 earthquakes were registered on the south side of Sakurajima, a populated volcanic island inside Kagoshima Bay, about 590 miles southwest of Tokyo.
The tremors, none strong enough to be felt by humans, were recorded between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, the agency said.
The 3,686-foot-high Sakurajima volcano has erupted 121 times so far this year, compared with 103 times in all of last year, the agency said.
The agency said activity at the volcano has increased slightly and urged caution as further volcanic activity was possible.
Japan, which sits atop four tectonic plates, is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone nations.
