Luther Prep levels Oakfield for third straight victory

January 24, 2019

Fourteen Luther Prep players took the floor and each of them knocked down a shot from the field.

The Phoenix had the luxury of playing everyone after grabbing an early 21-6 lead and never relented en route to beating Oakfield 82-56 in a nonconference game Monday at LPS for the team’s third straight win.

Luther Prep (8-3) led by 21 points at halftime and made seven 3-pointers in the first frame.

“The goal was to come out strong,” Luther Prep head coach Nate Kieselhorst said. “It was nice that everybody contributed. Especially in the first half, everybody was contributing on both the offensive and defensive ends. It was a nice team effort. Considering the team we were playing was an opportunity to get in, they made the most of their opportunity.”

Senior guard Luke Schlomer scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half and senior guard Joel Schewe hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

Luther Prep grabbed an eight-point lead in the first four minutes of action after senior forward Zach Gregorius made a transition layup.

Schlomer buried 3-point shots on consecutive possessions to push the Phoenix advantage to 21-6 with 11 minutes, 25 seconds remaining before halftime.

The outside shots kept coming for Luther Prep as Schewe made two before the break and junior guards Adam Brands and Paul Frick each hit one.

In the second half, the Phoenix lead never dipped below double figures. Senior guard Micah Kieselhorst delivered a nifty behind-the-back pass to Schlomer in transition for an easy layup to extend the lead to 20 with 12 minutes to play.

On the next offensive trip, Schewe made a 3-point shot from the top of the key.

The team’s lead was never in danger but that didn’t keep Phoenix players from hustling for loose balls and diving on the floor.

“That’s the way they’ve been all year,” coach Kieselhorst said. “Their work ethic has been phenomenal. I appreciate that and how hard they go at it. They feel they have some things to prove ... I was glad that they stay focused and did what they were supposed to do.”

Junior forward Cole Burow and Frick each tallied nine points. Senior guard Malachi Roeseler added eight points in the team’s sixth victory in seven outings.

Luther Prep made 32 field goals, nine of which were 3-point shots.

For Oakfield (8-6), senior forward Jaxson Hofman scored 18 points and Tyler Streeter chipped in 12.

Luther Prep hosts Lakeside Lutheran on Thursday in a Capitol North game at 7:30 p.m.
