Bengals Sign Erik Wilhelm

February 21, 1996

CINCINNATI (AP) _ Free-agent quarterback Erik Wilhelm signed a contract Wednesday with the Cincinnati Bengals, who are looking for a backup to Jeff Blake.

David Klingler, the former No. 1 quarterback, was relegated to second-string last season with Blake’s emergence as a Pro Bowl quarterback. Klingler is a free agent hoping to start for another team.

Wilhelm, 30, has been with Cincinnati for parts of six of the last seven seasons. He was on the team’s active list for the first seven games last season, but did not play.

He was released Oct. 24 and signed with the New York Jets on Nov. 8. He was on the Jets’ inactive list for the final six games.

``Our backup quarterback situation has been a little unsettled, and having Erik back puts some stability in the picture,″ coach Dave Shula said.
