Tropical Storm Josephine Takes Aim at Florida
MIAMI (AP) _ Tropical Storm Josephine was heading across the Gulf of Mexico for Florida, but the center of the storm was not expected to make landfall until Tuesday.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami issued a tropical storm warning for Florida’s west coast from Apalachicola to Venice. Josephine strengthened from a depression Sunday night.
At 5 a.m., Josephine was centered about 340 miles southwest of Apalachicola. With top winds near 50 mph, Josephine was moving east-northeast at about 15 mph.
Forecasters expected the storm to turn northeast, speed up, and grow stronger, boosted by warm Gulf waters.
Meteorologist Andrew Shashy said winds and rain on the edge of the storm could bring 5 inches of rain and storm surges of 3 to 5 feet above normal tides today.
Small craft along the Gulf coast from Venice to Brownsville, Texas, were advised to stay in port today.
