Sheriff: 2 people likely aboard single-engine plane
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — Authorities believe two people were aboard a single-engine plane whose wings were found in a North Carolina county.
Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone tells news outlets that two people likely were aboard the Piper PA-46 on Friday. He says wreckage was found when someone called 911 and said part of a plane had landed in their yard.
A spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board says it received a report that a plane had crashed about 1:45 p.m. Friday about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Raleigh.
The Federal Aviation Administration had reported the plane missing earlier Friday. News outlets report that plane was traveling from Virginia to Florida.
NTSB spokesman Terry Williams said an investigator had been sent to the scene.
