Recovery promoter sentenced for fraud

May 26, 2019

MOUNT HOPE, W.Va. — A man who promoted a Mount Hope substance abuse treatment center that never opened has been sentenced to six months in prison for fraud.

The Register-Herald reports David Stevens told local media in 2016 the planned recovery center would provide 100 men with therapy and classes. He said it was his way of giving back to the community.

Stevens received a $500,000 grant from the West Virginia Division of Justice and Community Services for the center. An investigation later found at least $136,900 in funds went either to Stevens directly or to his other companies.

The 57-year-old was sentenced this week in federal court. He is also to serve six months in home confinement and pay more than $137,000 in restitution.
