Dartmouth man pleads guilty to drunken driving
FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — A repeat drunken driver from Dartmouth has been sentenced to up to 18 years in prison for causing a crash that killed a 51-year-old Fairhaven man riding his motorcycle.
The Standard-Times (http://bit.ly/XYT7ze ) reports that Patrick Coelho was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to drunken driving, vehicular manslaughter and other charges in connection with the August 2011 death of Michael Powers.
Prosecutors say the 38-year-old Coelho fled the scene after striking Powers’ motorcycle, and was involved in a second accident a short distance away in which a motorist was injured. He again fled the scene, this time on foot, before being captured.
Police say they found a pint bottle and two nips of vodka in Coelho’s car and his blood alcohol level of 0.19 was more than twice the legal limit.
