Michigan Fans Celebrate Victory

January 2, 1998

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) _ Ann Arbor police shut down about a block of a university street Thursday night as crowds of Michigan fans celebrated the Wolverines’ Rose Bowl victory and probable national championship.

About 10 p.m., less than two hours after Michigan finished its first-ever 12-0 season with a 21-16 over Washington State, Sgt. Thomas Tanner said a peaceful crowd of about 350 people was waving flags and singing the school’s fight song.

``They’re just out there chanting and cheering,″ Tanner said. ``One of the other sergeants said it’s just women with young children out there, because everyone else is at the game.″

The crowd was a little larger an hour earlier, with about 500 people crowding the street.

Michigan last won the national title in 1948. The final Associated Press poll will be released Saturday morning, after No. 2 Nebraska plays No. 3 Tennessee on Friday night in the Orange Bowl.
