North Carolina-Wilmington 61, James Madison 53

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) _ Mark Byington hit five 3-pointers, and Lamont Franklin grabbed nine rebounds Wednesday night to lead North Carolina-Wilmington to a 61-53 victory over James Madison.

Byington’s 15 points paced the Seahawks (14-11 overall, 9-4 Colonial Athletic Association). Bill Mayew added 14 points and Keith Spencer had 10.

Eugene Atkinson scored a game-high 22 points for the Dukes (13-9, 7-5), while Charles Lott added 10 points and 14 rebounds.

James Madison took a 12-8 edge at 14:19 in the first half when Chatney Howard nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing. The Seahawks responded with a 19-2 run that was capped by an Oleg Kojenets layup.

Kojenets added a bank shot with 2:25 to play, and Billy Donlon’s spinning jumper in the lane at the buzzer gave N.C.-Wilmington a 31-18 lead at intermission.

The Seahawks took their biggest lead at 47-29 with Franklin hit a 3-pointer with 10:59 remaining in the game.

James Madison was held to 34.5 percent shooting for the game.
