Some campsites reopen at tornado-hit Louisiana state park
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser says some repairs from a May tornado have gone faster than expected at a northeast Louisiana state park, and some campsites are back open.
He said in a news release that the campsites at Jimmy Davis State Park in Chatham had been scheduled to open at the end of September, but 19 opened Friday. Nungesser says 21 more will open this Friday.
Chatham’s about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southeast of Monroe.
Much of the park was damaged by trees that fell to a tornado May 8. The group camp and north boat launch reopened May 17, with day-use and the beach area reopening last month.
Cabins and more than 30 campsites are still being assessed and repaired. Their reopening has not yet been determined.
