Three charged in Old Greenwich vehicle thefts

January 7, 2019

GREENWICH — Police arrested three alleged car thieves, one of whom was captured after a foot pursuit in Old Greenwich, authorities said Monday.

Two cars were recovered at the scene.

Police were called to Shore Road around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, on a report of “subjects attempting to steal motor vehicles,” according to the arrest report.

Responding officers said a 2006 Toyota Rav4 was driving with its lights off in the area, and it was pulled over.

Mas Alba, 19, of Orchard Street, Stamford, was allegedly driving the stolen vehicle. He was charged with conspiracy to commit larceny and burglary and resisting arrest. He was also cited for driving with a suspended license.

A juvenile in the car, whose name was not released due to his age, was also charged.

As police were detaining Alba, according to authorities, another vehicle came to the attention of officers. A white Jeep Patriot drove past the scene and then sped off, heading down a dead-end street off Shore Road, with police on his tail. Juan Espier, 18, of Hinckley Ave., Stamford, was allegedly behind the wheel of the Jeep Patriot, according to the arrest report, and he attempted to take off on foot before he was apprehended.

Police said he was in possession of a container of cannabis oil, and a flashlight. He was charged with larceny, burglary, possession of burglary tools, marijuana possession and resisting arrest.

Bail was set at $2,500 for Alba, and $5,000 for Espier.

Police are also investigating the theft of a 2018 Toyota Highlander in the same neighborhood, on Rocky Point Road, early on Saturday. It could not be ascertained definitively if that theft was related to the others. That vehicle was later recovered in a jurisdiction outside Greenwich.
