Two Jump From Ocean Liner Escaping Fire

July 2, 1987

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ A small fire aboard the 383-foot luxury liner Viking Princess forced two crewmen to dive overboard early Thursday, a Coast Guard spokeswoman said.

″A 23-foot Coast Guard boat that ferries people back and forth to Peanut Island was passing it when it saw two people jump overboard,″ said Petty Officer Sheila Galloway.

The Crown Cruise Line ship, which holds 700 passengers, was docked at the Port of Palm Beach when the fire was discovered at 7:02 a.m., Ms. Galloway said. Only the crew were believed to be on board, she said.

Dick Irons, administrative assistant to the port director, said the fire was limited to a mattress and was soon extinguished.
