Cubs Lift Patterson From Minors
CHICAGO (AP) _ The Chicago Cubs on Monday called up their top prospect, outfielder Corey Patterson, and two other members of Southern League champion West Tenn.
The Cubs also purchased the contracts of left-handed pitchers Joey Nation and Will Ohman from the Double-A farm.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs placed two players on the 60-day disabled list _ relieve Rick Aguilera (thumb) and starting pitcher Kevin Tapani (knee). Outfielder Raul Gonzales was designated for reassignment.
Patterson, the third overall pick in the 1998 draft, batted .366 with two homers and five RBIs in the Diamond Jaxx’s 10 playoff games. During the regular season, the 21-year-old left-handed hitter batted .261 with 22 homers, 82 RBIs and 27 stolen bases. He committed just three errors in 306 chances in center field.
Nation won two playoff starts for West Tenn after being acquired from the Atlanta Braves’ organization.
Ohman was 6-4 with three saves and an 1.89 ERA in 59 relief appearances in 2000.
