EACS board approves sale of former Hoagland Elementary

Enthusiasm filled the East Allen County Schools board room tonight as members and others discussed a former school’s future.

Hoagland Elementary School, which closed to East Allen students in 2014, will become a place of learning once again, assuming the sale to H1 Elite Investment Group goes through.

It plans to turn the nearly 61,300-square-foot building : which was also known as Heritage Elementary : into a “one-stop hub for training” with a focus on residential and commercial construction, representative Kareem Hunter said.

The school board unanimously approved the $175,000 offer seven weeks after district administration initially brought it forward.

The board had to reject the bid in June because it didn’t meet the minimum threshold of 100,000 offer was also denied. Because both offers fell short of the threshold, the board had to follow additional steps to accept a lower bid.

“I want to thank the whole board for even giving us the opportunity,” Hunter said Tuesday.

Board members congratulated Hunter and fellow representative Casey Mullins following the vote. They look forward to what’s to come, including a potential partnership benefiting East Allen students.

“What you are doing is well needed in that area,” Vice President Tim Hines said. “Keep in touch with us.”

Hunter, an experienced roofer, is also affiliated with Hunter One Construction, H1 Media and H1 Roofing, he said.

Changes at the former Hoagland school, 12009 Hoagland Road, could happen in a matter of months, with Hunter eying programs “up and running” by Jan. 1.

The building has about 20 classrooms, multiple offices, a cafeteria and kitchen, a media center and a gymnasium with wood floors, fixed wood bleachers and fixed goals.

Renovations are planned and will be done in phases, Hunter said. Upgrades include remodeled classrooms, a new roof and a renovated gym, he said, noting hopes to provide athletic opportunities.

Anna Bowman, a broker with Bradley Company, represented both sides in the sale. She’s thrilled with the match, she said, adding the buyers are passionate about their vision.

Hunter said they are “blessed with the location.”
