Wayne Memorial Community Health Centers was presented with a 2018 Pennsylvania Immunization Champion Award for Michelle Corrigan, R.N. and Sarah Mickel’s, L.P.N., revamp of the organization’s Immunization Policies and Procedures.
Corrigan, the wellness and clinical care coordinator, and Mickel, vaccine coordinator, recommended the purchase of pharmaceutical grade refrigerators and freezers, as well as implementation of Digital Data Loggers across all WMCHC sites.
The award was given during the 24th Annual PA Immunization Conference hosted by Penn State College of Medicine and the Pennsylvania Department of Health in Harrisburg.
PA DOH Section Inspector Bill Court nominated the duo. He noted “the exhausting efforts of Michelle and Sarah” and hailed WMCHC as a “model VFC provider.”
The award honors organizations and individuals for exemplary work in creating enhanced vaccine administration systems leading to improved overall immunization rates.
Local University of Scranton undergraduate students who were granted President’s Fellowships for Summer Research in 2018 include: Marissa Galardi of Archbald who partnered with George Gomez, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, to study “Control of Neuron Growth Using Synthetic Extracellular Matrix Molecules”; Nicole Nardella of Spring Brook Twp. partnered with Jason Graham, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics, to study “Data-driven Modeling of Complex Systems with Applications to Cardiac Physiology”; and Madalyne Sunday of South Abington Twp., who also partnered with Gomez to study “The Effect of Glycosaminoglycans on Neuroblastoma Cells.”
The fellowships are administered by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and offer each student the chance to partner with a faculty mentor to complete a research project during the summer.
Keystone Chapter UNICO National donated $500 to Dunmore resident Carl Yanowski.
Yanowski’s house caught fire in June and he lost everything in the consuming fire. Yanowski and the gentleman he cares for did not suffer any injuries.
Members Mark McDade, Nan Gramigna, president, and Cathy Gerard, Keystone Board Chairman, presented Yanowski with the donation.
