Indians Put Rincon on Disabled List

April 12, 1999

CLEVELAND (AP) _ The Indians placed left-handed reliever Ricky Rincon on the 15-day disabled list with a swollen left elbow on Monday and purchased the contract of Mark Langston, signed last week by the club.

Rincon, acquired during the offseason in a trade with Pittsburgh, was bothered by tightness in his left elbow over the weekend in Minnesota. He was examined Monday morning by Indians team doctors before being placed on the DL retroactive to April 11.

``It’s a little bit of a concern,″ Indians manager Mike Hargrove said before Cleveland won its home opener 5-2 in 10 innings over the Kansas City Royals.

Rincon, who appeared in two games for the Indians this season, is going on the DL for the second time in his career. He was sidelined with a strained groin for two weeks with the Pirates last season.

Indians general manager John Hart said an MRI performed Monday revealed no irregularities and Rincon may be able to begin throwing in a week.

Langston took a flight to Cleveland Sunday night and made his debut in the seventh inning Monday, getting the first batter he faced to ground into an inning-ending double play with the Indians trailing 2-0.

``I went to the Red Sox-Devil Rays game yesterday (in Tampa) and got a call to go to the airport,″ Langston said. ``I rushed home, got my baseball stuff and was on a 7:50 flight. It felt good to come in and contribute.″

``When he came in I was like, `Wow, that was quick,‴ said Cleveland catcher Sandy Alomar. ``We didn’t even get to go over the signs.″

The Indians signed Langston to a minor-league deal on April 4. Hargrove said he plans to use the 38-year-old as both a long reliever and in late-game, setup situations.

Langston, who was on Triple-A Buffalo’s roster, appeared in 22 games for the San Diego Padres last season, posting a 4-6 record with a 5.86 ERA. He pitched four innings of a simulated game during extended spring training on Saturday, allowing three hits and striking out six.
