Barry Hanson -- Phoenix
Barry William Hanson, 75, of Phoenix, died peacefully on June 22, 2018, in the company of loving family.
Barry was born in 1942 in Rochester, and graduated in 1960 from John Marshall High School. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and was an ardent sports fan with a passion for history. After the Army, he studied computer programming at Brown Institute and began a career spanning punched card computers, to mainframes, to the P.C. and the Internet.
As a boy, Barry played baseball and other sports, and he rooted for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Minnesota Gophers. He was a Vikings and Twins fan from their beginnings to the end of his life. With a move to Phoenix, he adopted the Arizona Diamondbacks, and with grandkids came even more beloved rooting interests.
Barry had a keen interest in history, particularly the Civil War, and he visited many battlefields and fascinated his sons, nephews, and grandkids with his collection of artifacts from that era. He loved games and was a terrific competitor whether in Hearts, video games, fantasy football, or anything else that he was playing (and often winning).
Barry is survived by sons, Jon and Eric, from his first marriage to Patricia L. Shay, and their families; sister, Karen Oliver; and brother, Bruce Hanson and families. He was preceded in death by parents, William and Dorothy; and by his second wife, Caryn.
He will be interred at Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, Va.
