Class M quarterfinal
The question before the house when St. Joseph played host to Killingly for a spot in the Class M title game was simple. Could St. Joseph’s defense keep Killingly’s balanced attack off the field long enough for the Cadets’ offense to maintain its high level of excellence?
Answers: A profound yes on both ballots.
Coach Joe Della Vecchia’s No. 1 seeded Hogs defeated the No. 4 Redmen, 52-7, at McDougall Stadium in Trumbull on Sunday afternoon.
St. Joseph (11-1) will seek its 14th state championship when it takes on either No. 2 seed Sheehan (10-1) or No. 5 seed Berlin (10-1) on Saturday at a site and time to be determined. The other semifinal was pushed to Monday night at 6:30 in Wallingford.
“We came out and did what we needed to do against a good and physical team,” Della Vecchia said. “Our defense was great. The offense was crisp. Our o-line did a great job giving David [Summers] and Jaden [Shirden] time and space.”
The Cadets’ defense limited Killingly (10-2), the defending state champions, to three first downs in the first half.
St. Joseph scored on its five possessions in the opening two quarters — and tacked on touchdowns on its first two series in the second half.
Summers completed 10-of-18 passes for 319 yards and four touchdowns.
Shirden ran 16 times in the first half for 116 yards and two scores. He caught two passes for 85 yards and a touchdown in the third quarter.
