DOVER, Del. (AP) _ Matt Walker kicked a 35-yard field goal with two seconds remaining to lift Rhode Island past Delaware State 17-14 Saturday.
The non-league game was the season-opener for both teams.
Rhode Island took a 14-0 lead, then had to fight back to win. The Rams scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Willie Edwards in the first quarter and an 83-yard punt return by Cy Butler early in the third quarter.
Delaware State fought back behind Fabian Thorne, who rushed for 116 yards on nine carries in the second half, including a 61-yard run that set up a 1-yard touchdown plunge by Dennis Jones.
Jones passed to Jennon Archie for 2 yards to tie the score with 9:35 left.
Thorne finished with 159 yards on 19 carries.
The Rams’ Chris Hixon completed 20-of-34 passes for 137 yards.
