New Fairfield’s Gallagher leads Westerners to victory

July 16, 2018

HOLYOKE, Mass. — Nick Gallagher of New Fairfield pitched six sensational innings — and the bullpen finished the job — as the Danbury Westerners defeated the Valley Blue Sox 5-2 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game Sunday night.

Gallagher, a senior-to-be and Binghamton University and a former All-State selection at New Fairfield High, scattered six hits and one earned run over six innings while striking out eight and walking none to improve his record with the Westerners this summer to 2-0 with a 2.07 earned-run average. Relievers Colin Donnelly and Andrew Gnazzo sealed the win, with Gnazzo working into and out of trouble in the bottom of the ninth to secure his first save of the summer.

Eduardo Antonini went 3-for-5 with a double and a run to lead the Westerners; his batting average climbed to .301. Nico Popa went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double and two runs-batted-in. Eddie McCabe of Norwalk went 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk and a run to bump his batting average to .373. Justin Lebek of Wilton went 2-for-4 with a run and his 23rd RBI to improve his batting average to .364. Jake Frasca of Darien went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run.

The Westerners, who finished the day five games out of a playoff spot in the NECBL’s Southern Division, are scheduled for a day off Monday before hosting the division-rival Newport Gulls on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Rogers Park.
