Bomb Near Spanish Port Kills One Guard, Wounds Another
SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain (AP) _ A bomb exploded Monday at a port near this Basque coastal city, killing one civil guard and maiming another, the civil governor’s office reported.
An official with the civil governor’s office said unidentified terrorists set off the bomb by remote control as the guards approached a sentry post in Pajares.
The explosion killed Francisco Robles Fuentes, 21, and blew off one leg of his partner, David Nanez Minguela, 23, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Nanez underwent surgery at a hospital.
There was no claim of responsibility for the attack. The official said police suspect radical separatists of the group ETA.
ETA stands for Euzkadi Ta Askatasuna, or Basque Land and Liberty in the Basque language. The group has claimed the killings of more than 650 people since 1968 in its campaign to wrest control of three Basque provinces from the Madrid government.
