Taos police: Colorado man killed in hit-and-run
TAOS — A 76-year-old Colorado man died Friday evening when he was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled as the man was crossing a roadway to have dinner at the Sagebrush Inn and Suites, police said.
Phillip Lowrey was transported to Holy Cross Hospital and was later flown to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where he died near midnight, according to Taos police Chief David Trujillo.
Lowrey was walking with a female companion across a dimly-lit section of Paseo del Pueblo Sur, between the Hampton Inn and Sagebrush Inn and Suites, when he was struck by the vehicle, which continued traveling southbound, according to witnesses.
One witness told police “they honked their horn at the pedestrians and had to swerve out of the way into the center turning lane to avoid hitting one of them,” Trujillo said.
The vehicle suspected in the hit-and-run was described as a large, dark sport utility vehicle with front passenger-side damage.
Police ask anyone with information about the vehicle or the driver to contact the department at 575-758-4656 or Taos County Crime Stoppers, which accepts tips anonymously, at 575-758-4258.
