Sellers Joins Browns, Not Redskins

March 15, 2001

CLEVELAND (AP) _ Mike Sellers, used as a tight end and blocking back in Washington, joined the Cleveland Browns on Thusrday after the Redskins failed to match an offer sheet on a three-year contract.

Sellers, a 25-year-old restricted free agent, probably will be used as a blocking tight end, complementing Aaron Shea. But Sellers also can play in the backfield.

Sellers caught eight passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns last season. But he was used mostly in blocking situations, and in 1999, the 260-pounder helped open holes that allowed Stephen Davis to lead the NFC in rushing.

The payroll-slashing Redskins had seven days to match the Browns’ offer for Sellers, who played three years in the Canadian Football League before signing with Washington in 1998.

Sellers’ contract is reportedly worth $2.4 million.
