LONDON (AP) - Des Smyth of Ireland has been disqualified from last week's Tenerife Open golf tournament and will have to foreit his prize money of $7,500.
European tour officials said Wednesday that Smyth, who finished in a tie for eighth place, has been punished retrospectively after admitting he mistakenly entered a wrong score on his card for the eighth hole during his final round at Golf de Sur.
Smyth breached the rules by removing a stone from around his ball within the margins of a lateral water hazard. He realized his error, but applied only a one-stroke penalty instead of the correct two strokes and returned his score as 7 instead of 8.
He realized his mistake after speaking to colleagues on the way to the next tournament, the Desert Classic in Dubai, and on arrival reported the incident to officials.
