2 roads closed in Florence County because of Hurricane Florence aftermath
FLORENCE, S.C. – Two roads are closed in Florence County because of Hurricane Florence and its aftermath.
According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, South Deep Woods Road is closed at South Persimmon Ford Road near Johnsonville, and Old River Road is closed between Paper Mill Road and Seven Mile Road. The S.C. Department of Transportation also lists Paper Mill Road between Isgett Road and Old River Road as closed; however, when the Morning News visited the area, there did not appear to be any indications that the road was closed.
Old River Road is closed around a bridge across Willow Creek. The closure of South Deep Woods Road is near Persimmon Ford Road’s crossing of Muddy Creek.
The bridge on Old River Road appears to have been flooded during the height of the flooding brought by Hurricane Florence. Under federal regulations, bridges must be inspected for structural problems before they can be reopened after they are underwater. Those inspections are underway.
If there are structural problems with the bridge across Willow Creek, the bridge will be the second bridge with problems on Old River Road. A bridge closer to Johnsonville on Old River Road was washed out after 2015 and 2016 storms and required replacement.
