Brazil congressman resigns over electoral crimes
SAO PAULO (AP) — A Brazilian congressman has resigned after being sentenced to more than three years of house arrest for offering women free sterilization in exchange for votes.
The Chamber of Deputies says in a statement that Asdrubal Bentes tendered his letter of resignation Wednesday afternoon after the Supreme Court turned down his final appeal.
The statement says he “was convicted of offering free surgeries to women who voted for him in the mayoral elections in the city of Maraba in 2004.” Asdrubal has denied wrongdoing.
He will be allowed to work outside his home but will have to return at the end of the work day.
Asdrubal says he plans to practice law.
