Earl Spencer, Man Settle Lawsuits

February 24, 1998

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) _ Princess Diana’s brother and the angry husband of his former lover settled rival court suits, the South African Press Association said today.

Don Collopy, a businessman, had sued for $30,000, alleging Earl Spencer had caused the breakdown of his marriage. Chantal Collopy had an affair with Spencer that lasted several years.

As part of the out-of-court settlement between the rivals, the 33-year-old earl dropped his countersuit for $100,000, alleging defamation and invasion of privacy, Collopy’s lawyer, Andy McPherson was quoted as telling the South African news agency.

``The terms of the settlement are to remain confidential,″ he said.

The affair became widely known during Earl Spencer’s protracted divorce battle last year, which ended the eight-year marriage with a settlement of more than $3 million. Chantal Collopy, 37, testified against the earl.

The former Victoria Lockwood alleged her husband had 12 mistresses during their marriage.

Spencer and his wife moved from Britain to South Africa with their four children in 1996.
