Beauty Queens Spurn Low-Calorie Dishes For French Fries, Hot Dogs
BANGALORE, India (AP) _ Homesick and tired of the heavy security surrounding the Miss World beauty pageant, contestants are ditching low-fat meals in favor of french fries, hot dogs and chocolate desserts.
``Initially, I thought they would be calorie conscious. ...I prepared dishes low in fat,″ said O.P. Khandwal, executive chef of the Windsor Manor Hotel in Bangalore where the 88 contestants and their chaperones are staying.
``But they told me not to worry about their diet because they miss home and want to eat food that is familiar,″ he told The Associated Press on Friday.
Khandwal has created 88 special dishes, one in honor of each contestant.
There’s Kelly’s Chicken Burger, for Miss USA Kelly Webber, a 20-year-old nursing student who wants to be a social worker.
There’s Rachael’s Truffle, a chocolate-and-cream dessert Khandwal whipped up for Miss United Kingdom Rachael Warner, who craves sweets. The Glasgow Hot Dog honors Miss British Virgin Islands Ayana Glasgow, who loves hot dogs.
One of the few vegetarian requests came from Miss Australia Nicole Smith. Chef Khandwal used pumpkin, broccoli and baby corn for her dish.
