MONTEREY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a man was killed when the car he was driving plunged more than 275 feet (84 meters) over a coastal California cliff.

Officials tell KEYT-TV it appears the sedan failed to negotiate a sharp turn along Highway 1 near Big Sur on Saturday.

The California Highway Patrol says a helicopter was called to assist in the initial search but it was canceled because of heavy fog. Crews were able to reach the wreckage from the beach below.

The coroner's office will identify the victim.

The news station says the crash happened just a few miles from the area where an Oregon woman survived for nearly a week after her car went over the cliff earlier this month.
