Hostages in Robbery Attempt Escape

August 12, 1993

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (AP) _ Six gunmen trying to rob a supermarket locked up eight employees Wednesday but fled after a deliveryman rescued the hostages. No one was injured.

The gunmen, three of whom wore Halloween masks, entered the closed Albertson’s around 3 a.m., cut telephone lines and ordered the eight employees into a room, authorities said.

When a dairy deliveryman showed up, he was ordered upstairs by the gunmen, but wasn’t locked up, said police spokeswoman Maryann Flanagan. The milkman apparently found the trapped employees and freed them, she said.

Sharpshooters surrounded the store, but when they entered about three hours later, the gunmen had fled, police said.

The gunmen were armed with three shotguns, an Uzi, a rifle and a .45 caliber pistol, Flanagan said.

″They indicated they were waiting for the manager to come in and open the safe,″ she said.

The manager did not arrive while the gunmen were in the store and there were no reports of stolen money, Flanagan said.
