Great Lakes Brewing to release Moondog Ale in cans
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Moondog Ale, which has been a brewpub-only draft at Great Lakes Brewing Co. in recent years, will be released in 16-ounce cans.
Twelve-packs will be available in the brewery’s gift shop beginning Thursday, Sept. 6, and then in retail distribution starting Monday, Sept. 10.
The beer is 5.5 percent alcohol with 30 International Bittering Units and made with Willamette hops. It won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 1992.
Great Lakes is no stranger for creating beer names and labels as homages to the city’s past, from its proudest moments (Eliot Ness Amber Lager, Holy Moses White Ale, Rally Drum Red Ale) to its less-than-stellar historic milestones (Burning River Pale Ale).
Moondog refers to, of course, the vanguard of rock and roll shows, the 1952 concert at Cleveland Arena. It is regarded as the first rock concert ever.
In 2000, on the 48th anniversary of the ball, the brewery hosted a forum on the concert – and served Moondog Ale.
