LATEST SPIDER-MAN MOVIE TOPS BOX OFFICE LIST
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Movie audiences continue to marvel at comic book superheroes — and the latest from the Marvel stable has landed at number-one on the current box office list. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” finished first in its debut weekend at the nation’s multiplexes, leading a field of new releases being rolled out for the holidays. “Into the Spider-Verse” took in $35.4 million in its first weekend, recouping about a-third of its production budget. Finishing second is “The Mule,” followed by “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch,” ″Ralph Breaks the Internet,” and “Mortal Engines.”

PETE DAVIDSON’S ONLINE POST PROMPTS NYPD VISIT
NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Davidson was on “Saturday Night Live” this week. And that was a relief to people who were worried about him. The comedian got fans nervous over another Instagram post suggesting he wanted to harm himself. In the post, Davidson repeated suggestions that he didn’t want to be on the earth anymore, adding, “I actually don’t know how much longer I can last.” Police in New York City visited the comedian to make sure he was ok. The NYPD didn’t say where they contacted Davidson. His post has since been deleted and Davidson appeared briefly on SNL, introducing a musical performance.

DISNEY ACTOR FIRED
NEW YORK (AP) — Disney Channel actor Stoney Westmoreland is out of a job. He’s been fired after being arrested in Salt Lake City for what authorities say was an attempt to have sex with an online contact he believed was 13 years old. Police in Utah say Westmoreland was on his way to what he thought would be a hookup with the girl when he was arrested Friday. He’s charged with enticing a minor and with sending inappropriate materials, including nude images. Disney announced Saturday that Westmoreland is fired from the sitcom “Andi Mack.” In the show, he plays the grandfather of the teenage character.
CBS - SEXUAL HARASSMENT
NEW YORK (AP) — The sexual harassment scandal rocking CBS is costing it not only part of its reputation — but also a huge chunk of its money. The network has agreed to give $20 million to 18 groups dedicated to ending sexual harassment in the workplace. Late last week, CBS acknowledged reaching a $9.5 million confidential deal with actress Eliza Dushku — who says she was written off the show “Bull” last spring after complaining about sexually-tinged comments from its star Michael Weatherly. Meanwhile, the network is still mulling over whether to pay its former top executive his full severance, after he left the company amid a sexual harassment scandal. Les Moonves was to get $120 million in severance. But that is on hold pending an investigation into his conduct while running CBS.
BILL COSBY - APPEAL
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bill Cosby won’t be home for the holidays. Rather he will be spending it in his new home these days: prison. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has rejected a request from the comedian to be set free on bail while he appeals its sexual assault conviction. The decision was handed down Friday — but doesn’t elaborate on the reason the request was denied. Cosby was convicted in April of drugging and molesting a woman in 2004. He has sought to have the case overturned on a number of grounds, so far without success.
OSCARS - AUCTION
LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s rare for a person to win an Oscar — even rarer for someone to buy one. But that so this past Friday when not one, but two Academy Award trophies were sold at auction. The best-picture Oscar for the 1947 movie “Gentleman’s Agreement” fetched $492,000 and the best-picture trophy for the 1935 film “Mutiny on the Bounty” brought in $240,000. Oscar auctions are rare because since 1951, winners have had to agree they can’t sell their trophies - except to the academy for $1.
ARTIE LANGE SKIRTS JAIL TIME
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — He did drugs. But he won’t do time. A judge in New Jersey has spared Artie Lange time behind bars, despite the comedian’s having tested positive for cocaine and amphetamine. Lange was in court in Newark this past Friday to answer for a probation violation. He was told to mind his behavior for four years in June after pleading guilty to heroin possession stemming from a traffic stop last year. Lange is 51 and is in the HBO series, “Crashing.”
MISS UNIVERSE NAMED
BANGKOK (AP) — The Philippines’ Catriona Gray is the new Miss Universe. She was crowned today in a competition in Bangkok. Gray beat contestants from 93 other countries — and triggered a huge celebration in her homeland. Gray wore a sparkling red dress she says was inspired by a volcano in the Philippines. It was also inspired by a dream. Gray says when she was a teen, her mom dreamt she’d win Miss Universe in a red dress. She says they cried together when the dream was realized. The first runner-up is Tamaryn Green of South Africa and the third-place finisher is Sthefany Gutierrez of Venezuela.
