July 21, 1999

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) _ A lobster boat carrying 50 people sank off Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast and a plane with 16 people on board was presumed to have crashed in the jungle on Tuesday.

Sixteen people were rescued by another boat, navy official Santiago Scorcia told the government’s Radio Nicaragua.

He said the boat sank near Sandy Bay, 280 miles southeast of Managua, the capital. No further details were available.

Meanwhile, a commerical airplane carrying 14 passengers and two crew members was feared to have crashed during a flight from Managua to Bluefields on the Caribbean coast, local radio stations reported. The plane never arrived in its scheduled one hour flight.

The Cessna 208 was believed to have crashed in a jungle area in central Nicaragua. A forecaster from the Nicaraguan Meteorological Institute said the crew had been warned that flying conditions were bad because of rain and thunderstorms.

Farmers in the area said they heard an explosion.
