Redskins’ Vannatter no-hits Buffalo while Mathes smacks a pair

The Herald-Dispatch BUFFALO, W.Va. — Harlie Vannatter pitched a no-hitter as Hurricane (4-3) blew out Buffalo 18-0 in the Putnam County Tournament in high school softball Friday.

Caiti Mathes smashed a three-run home run and a two-run homer in going 3 for 3 with six runs batted in. Vanatter went 2 for 3 with four RBI. Alivia Meeks was 2 for 4 and drove in four runs. Madison Moon went 2 for 3. Lindsey Phares was 2 for 4.

Vanatter struck out six and walked one, the lone blemish on what would have been a three-inning perfect game.

ST. ALBANS 4, SPRING VALLEY 3: Taylor Glancy belted a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to lift the Red Dragons (6-0) to a road win. Reliever Kinsey Hudson struck out 11 in four innings, while Emily Sharp smacked two hits. Emily Sowder doubled in a run for the Timberwolves (3-3).

CABELL MIDLAND 10, WOODROW WILSON 2: Rielly Lucas homered during an eight-run first inning as the Knights clobbered the Flying Eagles on Wednesday. Lucas went 2 for 4, as did Mikayla Ferguson and Olivia Pelfrey. Lucas drove in four runs and Jaelyn Lowe 2. Sydney Chapman was 2 for 3 and Gracie Hightower 2 for 4. Jess Terri was the winning pitcher, striking out 10 in five innings.

PARKERSBURG 6, CABELL MIDLAND 5: The Big Reds scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip past the Knights. Kisten Roberts went 2 for 3 and was the winning pitcher. Emily Allen was 2 for 4. For Cabell Midland, Sydney Chapman went 3 for 4 with two RBI. Rielly Lucas drove in two runs. Mikayla Ferguson went 2 for 4.

WAHAMA 10, RAVENSWOOD 4: The White Falcons (3-0) scored eight runs in the sixth inning to rally past the homestanding Red Devils (1-2). Emily VanMatre and Maddy VanMatre each went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Hannah Rose homered, doubled and drove in three runs. Hannah Billups and Lauren Noble each were 2 for 4.

BUFFALO 11, FAYETTEVILLE 1: The Bison pushed across 10 runs in the bottom of the first to put away the Pirates in three innings. Alicen Parsons doubled in a run and Olivia Arthur went 2 for 3 for Buffalo. Samantha Holbrook had a double and an RBI for Fayetteville.

Baseball

HURRICANE 7, PARKERSBURG SOUTH 1: Brenden Lewis worked five no-hit innings, striking out nine and walking one as the Redskins remained unbeaten with a triumph over the Patriots in the Sudden link Showcase at Appalachian Power Park. Matt Vance went 2 for 4 and drove in three runs for Hurricane (5-0). Chase Dunbar of South pitched four no-hit innings before the Redskins opened up their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Cole Bumgarner doubled and had an RBI for Hurricane. Nick Yoho doubled for the Patriots.

WINFIELD 5, LOGAN 4: Sam Ingram went 2 for 3 and the Generals used a three-run fifth inning to hang on against the visiting Wildcats. Nick Holtzapfel struck out five in two innings of relief for Winfield. Dawson Beckett and Lane Harmon each had a double and two RBI to lead Logan.

FAIRVIEW 4, TVC 0: Terrick Smith struck out 10 in four innings to earn the victory as the Eagles (2-0) shut out Teays Valley Christian. Preston Ledford picked up a save and went 3 for 3.

RACELAND 10, WEST CARTER 0: Caleb West allowed one hit in five innings to earn a win as the Rams (1-0) shut out the Comets (1-1). Jake Heighton and Hunter Lacks each had two hits. Heighton homered. Lacks drove in three runs.
