SALEM, Mass. (AP) _ A former nursing home aide who raped and impregnated a comatose patient was sentenced Friday to 11 years in prison.

Israel Moret pleaded guilty to rape and abusing a patient in a long-term care facility.

The woman later gave birth prematurely to a baby who suffered severe brain damage. The baby now needs round-the-clock care just as her mother does.

``Our family now has a second broken child because of what he did,'' the victim's sister said in court. ``Our hearts sink when we hold her, hear the machines that keep her alive, and anticipate her future.''

Moret was sentenced to 11 years in prison and 10 years of probation. His probation is conditional on not contacting the victim, her family, or her daughter and not working with the disabled.

The victim was a 24-year-old resident of Town Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lawrence when her pregnancy was discovered in October 1998.

Police asked male employees of the nursing home to submit blood samples. Using DNA analysis, they identified Moret as the father of the baby.

Moret's lawyer, Lawrence McGuire, said his client wanted to apologize to the victim's family.

``He has also told me to tell this court and all who will listen that he expects to do what he can for this child,'' McGuire said.
