Police Officer Indicted On Rape Charge
HOUSTON (AP) _ A police officer has been indicted on a charge of sexually assaulting a woman he stopped for a traffic violation.
Calvin Potter, 37, was indicted by a grand jury Friday, said Harris County Assistant District Attorney Alice Brown.
Potter, a Houston police officer since 1984, is accused of raping a 23- year-old woman on Nov. 8.
Prosecutors said the officer allegedly stopped the woman in her car, then took her driver’s license and insurance card and told her to follow him to a parking garage where he allegedly raped and sodomized her in his police car.
Potter, who has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the case, faces two counts - sexual assault and violation of a prisoner’s civil rights. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years.
