NEW YORK (AP) _ Ali Hufane, a senior at Fairleigh Dickinson University from Somalia, captured the individual title in the 32nd Collegiate Track Conference Cross Country Championships Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park.
Hufane, last year’s runner-up, took the lead just before the three-mile mark from Iona’s Brian Hayes and won the five-mile race by about 200 yards in 25 minutes, 4 seconds.
Hayes’ teammate, Trevor Sargeant, finished second in 25:24. Hayes wound up third in 25:35, edging Pat Lazery of Fordham by one second. Elton Lewis of C.W. Post was fifth in 25:43.
La Salle University, led by John Schwab’s 25:48 for sixth place, had five men in the top 20 and won the team title with 53 points. Iona, the 1985 champion, was second with 65 points and Glassboro finished third with 91.
Cheryl Simoni of Manhattan won the women’s three-mile race in 18:01. She was followed by Virginia Zaleski of Trenton State in 18:16 and Edith Vilardi of Manhattan in 18:35.
Manhattan won the team title with 32 points. Fordham was second with 80.
