Ben Ray Lujan announces bid for New Mexico Senate seat

April 1, 2019

Rep. Ben Ray Lujan said Monday he is running to replacing retiring Sen. Tom Udall in New Mexico.

“There has been a lot of speculation over the last week so I wanted you to hear it directly from me: I’m running to be your next United States senator,” Mr. Lujan, the assistant speaker of the House, said in an online video.

Mr. Lujan’s announcement comes days after Mr. Udall said he was not going to seek re-election.

The Latino Victory Fund celebrated the news, saying Mr. Lujan has been a “strong advocate fro the people of New Mexico and the Latino community across the country.”

“His decision to run is a critical opportunity to increase Latino representation in our government’s highest chamber,” the group said.

Mr. Lujan led the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee into the 2018 midterm elections, helping to flip control of the House.
