New Hampshire man found dead in apparent jail suicide
MIDDLETON, Mass. (AP) — Officials say an inmate from New Hampshire apparently took his own life in his county jail cell in Massachusetts.
Maurice Pratt, a spokesman for the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, tells the Salem News (http://bit.ly/1AqhE30) that 41-year-old Lee Walch of Manchester, New Hampshire, was found hanged in his cell just before 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Pratt said officers making rounds found Walch and he was pronounced dead at a hospital. He was the only inmate in the cell.
Pratt said Walch was in pretrial custody and had been brought to the jail Friday. He was arraigned Monday in Lawrence District Court on drug trafficking charges. Pratt said Walch also had outstanding New Hampshire warrants.
He said the jail’s security team and state police are investigating. It is the second apparent inmate suicide at the facility since mid-December.
