Fire damages home; residents flee, dog dies

A dog died and another dog and cat were rescued from a burning home on Fort Wayne’s north side Friday morning, officials said. 

The residents of the home escaped before firefighters arrived about 7 a.m. to the two-story home at 1719 Poinsette Drive, across the street from Hamilton Park, near Spring Street and Jessie Avenue.

The fire started on the first floor and traveled up walls to hidden spaces, officials said. It took firefighters about 40 minutes to bring the blaze under control, but not before the house sustainedextensive damage, the department said.

The cause is under investigation.
