Marla Maples: I Love Donald Trump

April 20, 1990

NEW YORK (AP) _ Model Marla Maples, who was rumored to be the other woman in the split-up of Donald and Ivana Trump, admitted that she loves Trump during a televised interview aired Thursday.

″I do love him,″ Maples answered when asked whether she had a romance with the billionaire real estate developer in an interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC’s ″Prime Time Live.″

″I can’t lie about it. Oh, I do,″ she added.

The segment was taped Wednesday in a house in Atlantic City, N.J., where Trump recently opened the glitzy Taj Mahal casino.

Asked if she talked with Trump about marriage, Maples replied, ″No. He’s a friend. ... He has a family and that’s No. 1 to him, I know.″

Was she the reason for the Trump split? ″Only the two of them know what really went wrong with their marriage. But I’m not the reason for that marriage having problems,″ she said, adding: ″As Donald has said himself, ’People just grow apart.‴

Maples would not discuss how she met Trump, nor would she talk about a reputed confrontation she had with Ivana Trump in Aspen, Colo., where the Trumps vacationed last year.

Of Ivana Trump, Maples said: ″I feel like she’s gone through a lot of pain. I can only imagine what it’s like to have your whole world as you knew it sort of shaken and put out there for everyone to see.″

She called Mrs. Trump ″an absolutely beautiful woman.″

Maples said she speaks with Trump ″every once in awhile. He just wants to know how we’re doing. I mean, he has a lot of sympathy for how we’ve been besieged by this.″ She was referring to her family.

″And I think he wants to see me come out looking OK. He’s very sorry. I think he sees that I’ve been a victim in the press that all started from his, his personal life.″

Maples said Trump approved of her doing the interview. ″I made sure of that.″

She added: ″ My family has been so besieged by the press, and I feel like it’s time that I step out and I take the heat for a bit for what they’ve had to go through.″
