Columbia 77, Yale 67

NEW YORK (AP) _ Tom Gwydir and Sean Couch combined for 28 points to lead Columbia to a 77-67 victory over Yale Friday night in an Ivy League game that featured 49 turnovers.

Columbia moved to a 10-4 lead within the first four minutes of the game and was never headed, moving to a 39-29 halftime lead. The Lions led by as many as 17 points late in the second half.

Gwydir scored 15 points and Couch 13 to lead the Lions, now 6-8 and 2-1 in the Ivy League.

Matt Whitehead had a game-high 23 points for the Bulldogs, now 9-7 and 2-2 in the league.

Yale committed 25 turnovers, including 15 in the first half when Columbia forged its early lead. The Lions committed 24 turnovers including 13 in the first half.

Columbia converted 25 of its 32 free throw attempts including 20 of 25 in the second half as the Lions turned back a late Yale surge that narrowed the margin to four points at 63-59 with 4:15 remaining.

Dale Smith, Walter Stewart and Kevin McIvor then sank two free throws each and Gwydir followed with a layup as Columbia pulled to a 71-59 lead and was never threatened thereafter.
