Man Convicted of Murder in Slaying of Former Marine
VICTORVILLE, Calif. (AP) _ A 22-year-old ex-convict was found guilty of murdering a former Marine sergeant who spent 444 days as a hostage in Iran.
A jury Tuesday convicted Anthony L. Maddox in the slaying of John D. McKeel Jr. on Nov. 1, 1991.
McKeel and his wife, Trudy, managed the apartment building where Maddox lived. Maddox robbed a woman and chased her to McKeel’s apartment, where Maddox shot McKeel during a struggle, authorities said.
McKeel, 38, was among 52 Americans held hostage in Iran between November 1979 and January 1981 by followers of the late Ayatollah Khomeini.
Maddox, who had prior robbery conviction, could be sentenced to life in prison. His attorney, Robert Hanna, said he would appeal.
